Iljin Composites - Type IV CNG Tanks
Iljin develops and manufactures Type IV compressed natural gas (CNG) tanks. Type IV tanks are made from composite carbon and fiberglass with a polymer liner, thus eliminating most steel except for the nozzles and valves. As a result, Type IV tanks are ultra-light weight as compared to traditional steel tanks and are primarily used in transportation applications. The company began as a research organization, KCR, in 1999 researching and designing Type IV tanks, providing them an expertise shared by few in the industry. They were acquired by the Iljin Group in 2011 at which time they started commercial production. They recently started selling in the U.S. and have NGV-2 certification for the most popular sizes of tanks. Iljin's primary advantage is its expertise in manufacturing efficiency which allows for low costs and innovative products. Costs vary, but Iljin has been found to be 10~40% below the pricing of its main competitors. Iljin also prides itself on availability of product being able to manufacture and deliver product within 2 to 3 months in an industry where lengthy backlogs (5~6 months) can kill orders. In addition, Iljin has a formal relationship with Hyundai to develop Hydrogen tanks for their passenger cars and buses and is one of only a few companies in the world that has the EC79 certification for Hydrogen
